With infrared control, a hand held transmitter sends out an infrared signal with the touch of a button. The resulting signal transmits to an IR receiver at the shade, directing it to open or close. Like IR remote control, the transmitter must be pointed at the shade sensor to operate.

With radio control the hand held remote does not have to be pointed at the shade. The new "Platinum Technology" works without the need to aim and also works through obstructions. The other big advantage is that one remote can operate shades individually or operate groups of shades all at the same time.
